Abstract

Medicinal plants are valued globally for their secondary metabolites, compounds of special interest due to their diverse biological activities and potential applications in sectors such as pharmaceuticals, food and agronomy. Secondary metabolites such as tannins, flavonoids and coumarins stand out for their therapeutic properties, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antitumor activities. Tannins are known for their astringent and therapeutic functions in gastrointestinal treatments, while flavonoids offer antioxidant and cardiovascular benefits, being essential for the prevention of chronic diseases. Anthocyanins, a type of flavonoid, are notable for their antioxidant properties that contribute to cardiovascular health and disease prevention. Isoflavones, found in soy, are studied for their anticancer effects and benefits in hormone replacement therapy. Research on these metabolites is crucial for the development of new therapeutic applications and advances in several scientific and industrial areas, reinforcing the importance of secondary metabolites of medicinal plants in the global health and technology scenario.
